Marilyn and I lived around the corner from each other, so we were at one another's homes all the time or we could be found sitting at the corner until we had to be home. We walked to school together until I got my driving license and then my Mother let me use the car for school. Marilyn was in my wedding in 1966 and we always kept up with each other since I came home several times a year. She was always so gracious. When my grandmother died at age 106 in 1989, Marilyn had all my family in her home and she and her Clarksdale friends had dinner prepared for us after the funeral. Since we had no place other than a motel to gather this was very special to our family. Then in 2003 she did the same when my mother passed away. Little did we know that the next year we would be attending Marilyn's funeral. What a great friend.
On a lighter side . . . after Anais Groner and Linda Love had come to Orlando to visit Disney World we decided that along with Marilyn we needed to get together. So since 1989 the four of us have met about every two years somewhere. . . Houston, Dallas, Jacksonville with a side trip to Savannah, Santa Fe, Linda's Oklahoma ranch, and her home in Texas and a cabin Marilyn and her husband owned near Greenwood on a lake, to Memphis to visit the home of Elvis!!, and our infamous trip to Oxford and Natchez!!!. Those times for me have been so special with three special friends.
Marilyn was always a leader in our student activities. Even in junior high she would play the piano for class events. She worked hard and graduated from high school with honors. I was fortunate to room with her in 1962, our freshman year at MSCW. She was a beautiful debutante. Later after she married George Flowers and they had 3 sons, we visited and shared history excursions. She was a committed teacher and an unselfish friend. I share the sadness we all feel at her loss.
